Mrs. Alli Brittain
Thursday morning 11/18 we had our 37 week OB appt along with our weekly u/s to measure fluid and one of our twice weekly NSTs. At the appt the u/s did not show any growth from the previous week but showed that the fluid was the lowest it has been to date. The OB asked me to go home, rest, and drink LOTS of water and come back first thing Friday morning. If AFI was still low on Friday, we would be inducing. I went home Thursday excited and nervous but followed doctor's orders and tried not to do to much other than finish packing the hospital bag just in case.
Went to bed Thursday night around 11:30pm with some serious back pain and nausea. DH got home from work around 12:30 came to bed around 1:30a. When he came to bed I was awake because my back was still killing me. He warmed up a heating pad for me, and rubbed my back because he is awesome like that. After about 20 minutes, I decided to get out of bed because the back pain seemed to be getting worse. Around this time, I realized the back pain was actually contractions. I started to time them and they were about 5 minutes apart lasting about 30 seconds each. We went and dropped off DS with my parents around 445am and got to the hospital around 6am. My OB was already there because we called the after hours number and let them know we were on our way. At my initial exam I was dilated to 2.5cm. I labored on my own til about 8am when I was at 4cm. They broke my water at 8am. Around 10am I had only progressed about .5cm so I asked for the epidural. The epidural seemed to effectively numb one side better than the other which was ok for the most part but ultimately a PITA. Around 12pm I woke up DH and told him to get the nurse because it was time to push! DH went and got the nurse who checked me and told me I was right, it was time. The epidural was pretty much useless at this point except for the fact that I couldn't feel my legs. I could feel all of the contractions again and even stronger than before. The nurses got everything in the room set up and I started pushing. I was having a really hard time pushing because I was in a lot of pain and I couldn't tell the difference between when I was having a contraction and when I wasn't. I was also exhausted from not having gotten any sleep so I didn't have a lot of energy for pushing either. After about 10-15 minutes of pushing Ethan Andrew arrived at 12:36pm. He is a healthy 7lbs and 19inches long with lots of dark hair!
We were released from the hospital on Saturday afternoon but have to follow up today or tomorrow with a pediatric urologist as Ethan has epispadius and will not be able to be circumcised due to this. His is a mild form where the opening of the urethra is located in the wrong spot but all of his organs are functioning normally so it could be much worse. Thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated as meeting with the specialist this week is nerve wrecking because we do not know anything more about his condition and what will need to be done in the future (possible surgery) until we meet with them. We also have to go back in 2 weeks for a follow-up hearing test as his right ear failed the test. We were told it was most likely the machine acting up, but to be sure, we have to have him retested.
As of right now we are home and happy and everyone is doing good!
