My water broke at 4:45 am on 11/6. I had woken up because my contractions felt stronger and I went to go to the bathroom and as soon as I got in there...GUSH! I literally stood there looking at it saying in my head "Oh my God, I'm pissing myself and I can't stop... " once I could think for a minute I realized what it really could have been, so I laid back down for a half hour to see if any more came out or if contractions would get worse (I was REALLY tired when I woke up and I did NOT want to be that chick who went to L&D because she pissed herself). When I stood back up, it happened again so I called my Dr and woke up H.
We got to the hospital at 7 am and they put me on an IV for antibiotics since I was at 35 weeks. When they checked me I was at 3cm. My contractions were getting painful, but I held out until 11 or so. They checked me again then and I only progressed to 4cm, so I asked for an epidural because if this was going to take long I wanted to rest (I had only gotten 2 hours of sleep that night). I was having back labor, so getting the epi honestly sucked- I can't lie. Once it started to take affect I rested pretty well for bits at a time. Then the fun started ;)
The nurse came in around 4 to empty my bladder and when she was putting the cath in I said, "am I supposed to feel everything you're doing?" She said it was normal to feel "pressure" but I said, "No, it hurts, I feel it all." She told me she would reposition me to try to get the epi to redistribute. At that point they checked me because my contractions all but stopped and I had only gone to 4.5-5 cm... so they started pitocin. YEAH- the girl who has been having contractions since 29 weeks needed freaking pitocin!
Within 10 minutes of the pitocin being started my contractions started going crazy. They checked me at 5 and I had gone to 7cm and by 6 I was at 9 cm. At that point I started feeling tremendous pain in my pelvis so the nurse called the anesthesiologist to come back and see what was going on. He checked the cath and said it was still in the same spot so offered to give me a boost. The boost only made my legs more numb but didn't relieve any of the pain in my pelvis. That's when he told me the epi must not have set correctly and the only option to try to numb what was supposed to be numb before pushing was to take it out and try again. I spoke to my Dr who said he didn't want me to do it and because of how bad it was the first time, I declined. The upside was that I could feel everything, so I would push effectively... but of course I would feel it and I really never wanted a "natural"ish birth. Ever.
I started pushing at 7 o'clock (after we saw Joe Pa get his 400th victory, WOO HOO!) and Lawson was born at 9:08 pm :) He got stuck on my pubic bone for a good 45 minutes so I kept having to switch positions to try to get him to be able to rotate enough to get around it. Poor kid's head looked like a ruffled potato chip because of it all :P The NICU team was there to check him over and he got 9's on his apgar and checked out great.
It was definitely the most intense thing I've ever done. The craziest part was that as soon as he was out and they put him on my stomach, the pain went away immediately and it was like it never happened. It was such a rush. I've healed really well with minimal discomfort (I had a 1st degree tear, 2 stitches, I haven't had any pain from them at all). The worst pain has been my back, where they had the epi.
