6:30am water broke (well trickled), took us about 30 minutes or so to decide if it was my water or not. Went to the hospital about 8:00am. Got assessed and found out that it was my water. Were told that we had to be back by 7:00pm to be checked again if they didn't see us sooner. In the car on the way home, contractions were getting unconfortable. I wanted out of the car so bad.
When we got home M had some breakfast and I had contractions, about 3-5 minutes apart. Still very bearable though. M and I had a shower to cope with the pain at about 10:00am (seriously helps with the pain). After the shower we were timing my contractions at around 2 minutes apart and lasting 40-60 seconds. We were a little worried because they were so close together and getting stronger. So off we went to the hospital.
I was still coping very well with the pain and when they checked me at 1:00pm I was 2cm dialated and 80-90% effaced. We walked alot and breathed through contractions. At around 2:00 pm I was checked again because the contractions were very strong and still about 2 minutes apart, but I hadn't changed any. They decided to admit me to a labour suite so I could get back in the shower, Which again really helped with the pain. I started using the entonox to help with contractions at about 3:30pm and it did help some, not with the pain but with the intensity. Contractions were pretty painful and I was not able to catch my breath and regroup in between because they had been so close together for so long. M was so awesome and helpful, he really helped to keep me calm when it was really rough.
My doctor checked me at 4:30pm and I was a tight 3cm, and she was face up not down. He was concerned that because my contractions were so intense that I was not able to relax my body and breath. I was panicing for sure. He suggested I get an epidural, so that my body could relax a little and I could dialate more successfully. I got the epidural at 5:00pm and after about half an hour the pain was very bearable. I still had full feeling in my legs and could move around I even got up to the bathroom to pee. I still had a fair bit of pain in my bottom and perineum but it was nowhere near the pain I had before, maybe a 3/10.
I got a good hour and a half of relief before I started getting really uncomfortable again. Now about a 5-6/10. The anesthetist came back at 6:30pm to give me a top up on the epidural, that did nothing but make my legs more numb. I was breathing through the pain, but it was getting pretty intense. They checked my cervix at 6:30 and I was 5cm dialted and completly thinned out. We had a second top up at around 7:30pm to help with the pain I was having, but it really did nothing. So I continued to breath through it, the pain was only about 6/10. I had so much pressure in my bottom. At 8:15pm I was checked again and was fully dialated, but they discovered that she had passed meconium in utero.
They wanted me to wait longer before pushing because she was still not facing down comepletly yet. That was fine by me, I was so numb and quite annoyed with myself for having the top ups because I was so numb! I wiggled my toes and rocked my pelvis for about an hour trying to get rid of the freezing. The doctor came in at around 9:15pm and said to try some practice pushing to see if we could get her face down. The pressure was insane and painful. The pushing actually helped relieve that. She said my practice pushes looked good and they could see her hair.
They said I was able to push for real and asked what position I would like to push in, I was a little confused because I still felt pretty numb. I took the chance to say birthing bar though, It was placed on the bed and I grabbed onto it and pulled myself into the squatting position! I and everyone in the room was so shocked I could do that because of how frozen I was just 45 minutes ago. I gave 5-6 pushes in that position but it was hard to get the right angle to bear down the way I wanterd to so I got back down on the bed and put my legs up on the bar. I pushed through about 10 contractions in total and after 24 minutes of pushing she was born. She had the cord wrapped around her neck once, but our doctor said it was loose and hadn't cause her any trouble. They had to take her to be checked by the resusitation team right away because of the meconium, but she checked out perfect and they brought her over to me. Best moment of my life for sure.
I had very superficial tearing and didn't need any stitches, I had some pretty heavy bleeding at first but after some uterus massage they got it settled down. I was able to breastfeed right away, and walk to the bathroom about and hour after she came out. To sum it all up, it was an amazing and surreal experience and I would totally do it all over again.
If you got through that good for you, its uber wordy. If not no worries I understand. I hope everyone very happy and good birth experiences!
